MRH Early Childhood Center Makes Strides in Student Fitness

After the excitement from the ECC Fun Run on Halloween, many of the children began to  express more of an interest in running and walking. With that, the first ever MRH ECC First Grade Running and Walking Club was launched in November.

students gather for running (or walking) club The club, which meets every Tuesday, has 25 students who participate. On Tuesdays, all students engage in stretching, running or walking the high school track, and encouraging their peers for an hour after school. Many of the children have also committed to participating in the Read, Right, Run Marathon sponsored by Go! St. Louis. With this commitment, students sign up to read 26 books, do 26 good deeds, and run 26 miles from October- April. On April 6, 2013, the students will have the opportunity to run their last 1.2 miles with 5,000 other students from the St. Louis area and receive a medal at the end of the race. The children's dedication, encouraging attitude towards one another, and desire to want to be fit has truly been inspiring to myself, along with fellow ECC staff, students, and families.

Because of the children's excitement and the overwhelming response from so many first graders who wanted to join the running club (which filled to capacity extremely fast), we started an ECC recess walking and running initiative for all kindergarten and first grade students. Students have the opportunity to complete laps around the park space at recess and earn recognition for completing increments of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 miles. Students receive a necklace for their accomplishments along with a foot charm for each 5 miles they run. The children are working hard to stay healthy and be fit and their positive attitude has been influential to not only students and staff, but also the community. To date, Kindergarten and First grade students have already completed over 300 miles at recess!

If you're interested in cheering on our first ECC group of runners at the Go! St. Louis Family Fitness Day, feel free to join us and cheer on the young blue devils at 9:15 a.m. near the Forest Park Visitor's Center.
