The Language of Dramatic Play

 

Students at the Early Childhood Center learn to write to communicate their ideas to others. A kindergartner is expected to learn how to write with spaces between words and to be able to read what they write. Mrs. Freeman's kindergarten class recently set up a puppetry center. Within days the students began to write down the ideas they had for puppet shows. After these ‘scripts’ are read to other students they get the puppet show ready for acting! Students use a variety of objects to create the setting. Small stones become pancakes, wood blocks are ice packs, blue fabric is a lake and baskets become boats.

The MRH Early Childhood Center uses the metaphor School as Studio to guide teaching. When students write puppet shows that have the opportunity to combine the arts of writing and puppetry. See images below.
