School as Studio: Children Learn With Music Across the Curriculum

Music is alive and awesome at the ECC! At this point in the year, the Kindergarten students have finished their unit on the instruments of the orchestra and are putting together all the rhythmic and melodic skills they have been learning to prepare for the kindergarten concert, which will be in the MRH High School auditorium on April 10, 2014. The first graders plowed through their music textbooks before moving onto concert preparation of their own. The program has performed the longest concert ever put together at the ECC in December and now, students are moving into their final project: learning to read music and write their own compositions. By the end of the year, the first graders will have composed a piece for an instrument of their choice, which Matt Pentecost, the school's music teacher, will perform in the last few days of school for any audience that wants to come.

Meanwhile, in preschool, students had two holiday sing-a-longs, and plan to have more. The home space teachers have started bringing small groups to the music room, which opens up the possibilities of what the district's youngest learners can do.

In Friday Music Club, first graders continued a year-long exploration of the limits of their creativity and imagination. The program is looking forward to the studio renovations that will be coming soon. In the meantime, the ECC music program will keep the beat going!
