MRH Early Childhood Center Receives Grant from Whole Food Kids

Recently, the ECC received a $2,000 grant to assist with the ongoing efforts of the Seed to Table program. This generous grant is from the Whole Kids Foundations (an extension of Whole Foods Market), a nonprofit corporation who is dedicated to helping kids eat better by inspiring families and supporting schools to improve children’s nutrition and wellness.

MRH applied for this grant with a vision to provide additional funding for the on-going garden expenses. MRH’s ECC garden program is in its seventh year, currently serving 350+ children ages three to seven. Each child has one hour of contact time (with the garden and fresh produce) per week for 40 weeks per year. The Seed to Table program’s goals are to promote principles of sustainability and stewardship, teach respect for nature and the environment, and to teach the basic principles of organic gardening. The students engage in hands-on exploration of food and nutrition while the program emphasizes healthy lifestyle choices, promotes the value of cooperation, teamwork, responsibility and sense of place. The students and staff use the garden as an outdoor classroom. It creates a sense of community among students, teachers, parents and members of the community.

The Seed to Table Program supports all areas of the curriculum using the natural world as the tool. The grant was awarded to assist in improving children’s nutrition and wellness with the goal of ending the childhood obesity epidemic.
