School as Studio: Children Learn Through Dramatic Play
How Does Play Support Learning?
The Office was created in response to the increased interest in socio-dramatic play the teachers observed the children engaging in. The play centered on a few laptop computers and a library space found in a different area of the school. Teachers noticed the children constructing play scenarios involving the re-occurring theme of “office”. Doctor’s office, Dentist, Beauty Salon and Teacher were the four main themes we observed and then re-created through supplies and materials here in are own classroom space. To further support this theme, the teachers are planning to take neighborhood walks to near-by office spaces, begin drawing the human figure and experiment with representing these ideas in clay.
