MRH High Group Continues Tackling Issues of Race and Social Justice

Student Group on Race Relations addresses MRH board.Members of the Student Group on Race Relations (SGORR) briefed MRH school board members Thursday on their ongoing series of discussions about issues of race and social justice.

SGORR is an organization of diverse high school students in MRH High School that promotes positive social relations across all boundaries of difference by increasing self-awareness and empathy for others. The group was created in the summer of 2014 prior to the Ferguson riots. Principal Dr. Kevin Grawer had visited Shaker Heights High in Cleveland, Ohio in April 2014 and witnessed their SGORR meeting firsthand. Planning for the MRH SGORR club began in June of 2014.

SGORR group members brief MRH board members Thursday night.Members Tamar Crump, Brianna Carter, and Juanita Fiddmont explained to board members the primary areas of discussion at group meetings: mental models, the ladder of oppression, stereotypes/prejudice/discrimination, the Michael Brown case, the Stockley case, Colin Kaepernick “taking a knee,” ingrained bias, and many other topics.

They also laid out their plans to evolve SGORR at future gatherings. Those include representing opposing viewpoints during meetings rather than role playing them, consistent attendance, and attracting more males.
