Three MRH Teachers Earn National Board Certification

The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District is proud to announce Elementary teachers Peggy O’Neal and Abby Smith, along with High School teacher Rachel Ward, have achieved the prestigious honor of National Board Certification. MRH now has a total of 11 faculty members who have obtained this high honor:

  • Cheryl Carmon (HS, Mathematics)
  • Mary Darst (Elem, Counselor)
  • Gwen Donnell (HS, Counselor)
  • Kathleen Dwyer (HS, Science)
  • Jamie Kelley (MS, Social Studies)
  • Daniel Lyons (Elem, Gifted Teacher/Museum Director)
  • Peggy O’Neal (Elem, 5th Grade)
  • Derek Rowley (HS, English)
  • Abby Smith (Elem, 3rd Grade)
  • Rachel Ward (HS, Mathematics)

National Board Certification is one of the premier honors that any teacher can receive. Certification is a yearlong process in which teachers submit portfolios that include student work, assignments, videos, and a thorough analysis of classroom teaching. Additionally, National Board candidates take six assessments on their knowledge in their subject area.

Less than four percent of all teachers in the United States have achieved National Board Certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). MRH exceeds this national average by currently having 10% of its teaching faculty certified.

According NBPTS, 62 teachers in Missouri achieved certification for the 2011-2012 school year. Of those 62 teachers, 42 were from the St. Louis area coming from the following ten school districts:

  • Rockwood – 14
  • Francis Howell – 6
  • Lindbergh – 6
  • Parkway – 5
  • Kirkwood – 4
  • Maplewood Richmond Heights – 3
  • Hancock Place – 1
  • Hazelwood – 1
  • Special School District – 1
  • Wentzville – 1

NBPTS standards are based on core propositions that form the foundation for what all accomplished teachers should know and be able to do and provide a reference that helps educators link teaching standards to teaching practice.

Five Core Propositions

  • Teachers are committed to students & their learning.
  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  • Teachers are responsible for managing & monitoring student learning.
  • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  • Teachers are members of learning communities.
