MRH Closing Procedures for Weather-Related or Other Emergency Situations

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

Karen Hall As the second quarter of the 2014-2015 school year gets underway, we want to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians about our procedures and notifications for closing school. Every effort will be made to keep school in session to provide our students with continued learning opportunities. MRH Schools will close only when it is necessary for the safety of students and staff. These conditions can be related to inclement winter weather, but they may also be caused by any emergency situation that occurs within the District.

This year at MRH we have the option of a “late start” where classes would begin 1 hour and 30 minutes later than normal (ECC: 9:30 a.m., ELEM: 9:00 a.m., MS: 9:30 a.m., and HS: 9:35 a.m.). If the weather, road conditions, or other emergency situations are not severe enough to warrant cancellation, but problematic enough to cause delays, this option will give students and staff additional time to get to school without having to use a full day. Full details on closing procedures are on our website at www.mrhschools.net under News/Weather Closings.

When the decision is made to close schools or alter our school day, we use various procedures to notify the MRH community. Notification announcements for full-day school closings or a late start to school will normally be made by 5:00 a.m., and afternoon and evening activity cancellations will normally be announced by 2:00 p.m.

Closing and emergency notifications are sent via phone calls through the District’s parent “robocall” notification system, posted on the District’s website, Facebook pages, and Twitter accounts. We also post school closings on the following radio and television stations:

  • Radio: KMOX (AM 1120)
  • TV: KTVI (Channel 2), KMOV (Channel 4), KSDK (Channel 5), KPLR (Channel 11), and KDNL (Channel 30)

While we try not to close school early due to weather-related concerns, there could be other emergency situations where parents/guardians are asked to pick up students early from school. Every family should have a plan for picking up children from school in such a situation. We also ask that you make sure you have provided your child’s school with information on all adults who are authorized to pick up your child at school. If necessary, due to safety concerns, students will be kept at school until they are picked up by an adult who has previously been identified on the emergency contact form that parents are asked to complete at the beginning of each school year.

Thinking about emergency situations at school can be uncomfortable, but it is work that we gladly do to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Regardless of whether it’s a school safety issue, a power outage or inclement weather, the MRH School District plans for emergencies and reviews our procedures on a regular basis to ensure that our schools continue to be a safe place for students to learn and teachers to work.

Sincerely,

Karen I. Hall
Superintendent
