MS Students Construct Weather Measuring Instruments
As part of their weather unit, scientists in Mrs. Canning’s class constructed instruments for measuring various types of weather. Working in teams, students were tasked with researching and building five different weather instruments of their own design. The completed instruments need to measure temperature (thermometer), wind speed/direction (anemometer), humidity (hygrometer), precipitation (rain gauge), and barometric pressure (barometer). Although each team member was responsible for building one device, the entire team is accountable for analyzing and testing each design, as well as calibrating the instruments in order to ensure precision. Beginning Monday, students will use their instruments to collect data over a 6 day period. Data will be recorded on team created spreadsheets, and students will be evaluated on how well their instruments work, their ability to collaborate, their organization, and their knowledge of weather variables.
