MRH Launches Parents as Teachers for 2011-12 Year
Research has shown that the early years of a child’s life are critical for success in school and life. As the saying goes, “Parents are their children’s first teachers.” That’s why the Parents as Teachers program is so vital, as it helps support families with children until they reach school age.
The Parents as Teachers program in the MRH School District is now underway, and is having a 2011-2012 kick off event on Wednesday, Sept. 7. While other districts have made drastic changes and cuts to their PAT programs, MRH has remained committed to the Parents as Teachers program. This is good news for expecting and young parents in the MRH district.
“Despite the significant state cuts, MRH continues to believe Parents as Teachers is a vital program for our community,” said Cyndi Hebenstreit, principal of the MRH Early Childhood Center, which operates the program. Programs offered by Parents as Teachers include
- Personal home visits,
- Group meetings and events,
- Screenings (developmental assessment, hearing, and vision),
- Valuable handouts for parenting and child development,
- Information on community resources, and
- PAT newsletters.
The Sept. 7 kick off event is a family picnic for all MRH Early Childhood Center families, Parents as Teachers families, and any family in the MRH district interested in Parents as Teachers services. The event will take place at the MRH High School field from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Families need to bring their own food, plus any blankets to sit on.
