Pinworm Awareness

Sept. 17, 2018

An Important Update from ECC's Nurse Michelle:   I am writing today in response to reported Facebook posts regarding an “outbreak of pinworms" at the ECC.  I want to assure you that even though we have had a few reported cases at the ECC, there is not an outbreak.  Pinworms have been around for decades affecting mostly children from 5-10 years old.  Although they can cause a lot of anxiety, they do not harm us.  It is mildly contagious, if your child has been exposed to a child with pinworms, but no symptoms (several weeks are passed), your child probably will not get them.  Contact your pediatrician if your child has signs:  rectal itching especially at night, fussy / wakes up often at night.

Hand Washing is the #1 way to keep from getting pinworms, as well as, the best prevention for preventing the spread of other infections.

The following practices are in place at the ECC to minimize the spread of this and other health issues:

  • With the start of this school year ECC instituted a scheduled bathroom break prior to lunch for all K-2nd graders, (preschool already had this practice) instead of relying on hand sanitzer to clean hands before lunch.
  • Prek-2nd grade have bathroom breaks following outside play to wash hands
  • A disinfectant called Fusion is used that kills pinworms
  • Handwashing is taught by Chef Marino in the first weeks of school
  • Classroom lessons on handwashing are also taught by a local health organization

Below are tips for home care and reduce your child's chances of contracting pinworms

*Wash your hands with warm, soapy water before eating, after playing outside, and after using the toilet and any other time you notice dirty hands for 20 seconds (Have your child sing the ABC’ song or count to 20).

*Keep fingernails short and clean and remind children not to bite their nails.

*Shower/bath daily.

*Have your child change underwear every day because pinworm eggs can hang around clothes

*Wash pajamas every few days

*Talk to your child about the importance of handwashing as a way to keep them healthy
