1st graders report on the effects of COVID 19 in their special report

"Cool School News!"

Dear ECC Families:

I am writing to share that K/1/2 report cards will be mailed the week of June 19th. Class placement letters for the 2021-2022 school year will be mailed or sent electronically by July 16th. Many families are wondering about Open Houses, Orientation events and Home Visits for the coming school year, which is understandable. While we are not sure what the CDC guidelines will be in August in terms of large gatherings, we want to assure you that we will find ways using zoom, video recordings, and or scheduled small group visits to welcome you and your child to the new year. In person home visits are allowed in outside venues or virtual home visits are still options as well. More details will be forthcoming as we move closer to the start of school.

2021-2022 Start Dates:

Tuesday, August 24th: Kdg - 12th Grade

Tuesday, August 31st: First Friends & Preschool

Wednesday, September 1st: MWF Preschoolers begin

Check out the lush vegetation in our ECC Farm Gardens! Students and families are welcome to harvest from the school garden this summer! We have lettuce, kale, cabbage, squash, broccoli and tomatoes growing, to name a few.

Harvesting reminder:

Not everything in the garden will be ready to harvest at the same time. Please wait till crops are ready. Do not work in the garden when feeling ill. Always wash your hands before and after harvesting fresh produce. Use clean gloves or clean hands when picking produce. Do not eat fresh produce while harvesting, wash thoroughly when home. If you have garden or harvest specific questions, please contact Mrs. Mathis at: jessica.mathis@mrhschools.net

Enjoy!!

ECC Weekly Parent Update: June 1st

Reminder: Memorial Day is Monday, May 31st - No School

Our last day of school is Thursday, June 10th

From the Desk of Mr. Pentecost:

As a capstone project, the 1st grade students compose their own piece of music for the instrument of their choice. Since this year did not allow for our traditional end of the year recital with parents, I will perform all 1st grade students compositions in one online evening concert.

Please mark the date on your calendar for Monday, June 7th beginning at 7:00 p.m. Click here to join the ZOOM concert!

Building Community Through Technology

This year, children in Mrs. Veselsky and Mr. Brandon's Kindergarten class discussed many different Social Studies concepts that included, home, family, and responsibilities. These discussions

sparked interest in the children while in the virtual learning, leading us to make a video highlighting these concepts. This video project became the catalyst for the children getting to know each other better and building community, although we were distant from each other.

This work gained momentum and continued when we returned to in-person learning. Children's interests became more focused on maps. Children learned how to use a map to locate a place such as their homes, practiced giving and using directions, and understood the importance of traffic signs.

Next, children used natural materials to construct representations of their homes that was included in the video and later added to our community map, now on display in our classroom.

Click here to see a little snippet of this exciting project!!

Best to all,

Brandon McClure & Kristin Veselsky

A note from Nurse Michelle:

Thank you for following our illness protocol with the symptom decision tree. This mitigation strategy has been instrumental in keeping transmission of the covid-19 virus down, which has kept schools open. I know how easy it is to say, "it's just a cold or allergies," but we cannot let our guard down yet. Following this symptom decision tree gives us the confidence of in-person learning.

Daily Health Screenings at home are very important in preventing the spread of covid-19 and keeping our school safe. Now the availability to get immunized against the Covid-19 virus has increased for 12 years and older, the younger children are still at risk of contracting the virus and spreading it to others. Research has shown that children typically have milder symptoms and a runny nose, sore throat and or cough needs to be evaluated by their doctor to rule out Covid-19.

Common symptoms of both Covid-19 and Allergies are:

  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • congestion
  • runny nose

Symptoms more common with Covid-19 are:

  • fever and chills
  • muscle & body aches
  • new loss of taste or smell
  • nausea / vomiting
  • diarrhea

Symptoms more common of seasonal allergies are:

  • itchy or watery eyes
  • sneezing

Please continue to:

  • Daily Health Screenings at home & follow Symptom Decision Tree

      *Are you experiencing:

  • fever
  • trouble breathing
  • cough
  • chills
  • loss of taste or smell
  • congestion / runny nose
  • nausea / vomiting / diarrhea
  • muscle ache
  • headache

*have you been in "close contact" with someone who has been

diagnosed with Covid-19? (Close contact is defined as within 6 feet of 15 minutes or longer)

  • Stay home when you are sick and report your child's illness!!

  • Wear your mask correctly- staff & students will continue to be masked
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Watch your distance

Thank you,

Michelle Davis, R.N., B.S.N.
