Elementary Competes in Equations Competition
Equation Club explores a broad range of math topics and elementary arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation and root operation as well as logarithms, fractions, decimals, percentages, variables, algebra, functions and more.
The club competes in The Gifted Resource Center’s Academic Challenge Cup Equations Tournament. The focus here, is not necessarily the competition but having fun and thinking of math differently as the students play various equation games.
On Wednesday, February 25, 2015, 15 club members went to the University of Missouri-St. Louis to compete with 50 other teams of third – fifth grade students from the St. Louis area.
GRC believes “The purpose of this competition is to engage students in high-level thinking in a friendly competitive spirit. It is more important for students to leave the competition with a feeling of success and having fun, rather for them to leave with a trophy in hand. Everyone who does his/her best is a “winner.” Ranking awards are not given; students and teams do not know what place they earned.”
Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary brought a third, fourth and fifth grade team to the event.
Jackson Corcoran received an award for being one of the “top four” fifth grade students at the competition. In GRC’s sprit of fun and creativity MRH’s 3rd Grade team was awarded “Best Third Grade Team Name”, The PEMDAS PALS.
