St. Louis County Health Department Reports Increase in Shigellosis

Dear MRH Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Today we received notice from the St. Louis County Health Department regarding a confirmed case of shigellosis in a patient who recently swam at the Maplewood Family Aquatic Center.

Shigellosis is a disease caused by the shigella bacterium.  The St. Louis County Health Department has reported a recent increase in cases throughout the entire St. Louis area. The symptoms of shigellosis may include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, nausea and vomiting. Shigella is spread though contact with stool of infected persons and is extremely contagious.

Children or any members of your household who develop any of these symptoms should be tested for shigellosis by having a stool specimen examination. This can be done through your physician’s office or the health department.

If your child or any other family member tests positive for shigellosis, your physician will guide you in treatment options. Please do not send a child to school if they have diarrhea. Our school policy is that students need to be diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning.

An information sheet on shigellosis is attached. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse or the St. Louis County Health Department at (314) 615-1630.

Sincerely,

MRH School District Nurses

MRH Activities at the Maplewood Family Aquatic Center: MRH has been in contact with the St. Louis County Health Department and will not resume our swim unit until we receive direct communication from the Department that it is safe to be back in the water with students.  The St. Louis County Health Department has provided the City of Maplewood detailed action steps to bring the pool back to a safe condition for all students. Before any students resume the unit, we will be sure communication is made to all parents.
