MRH Student Musician Selected for Prestigious Composers Workshop

MRH's Jude Tanner to study under local musical greats. If it wasn't for a bit of providence, Jude Tanner might have missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

The MRH 11th-grader and accomplished guitarist was recently walking through the Research & Design Center and noticed a small flier with an application to a student composers workshop, led by six-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard and internationally known educator, arranger, and music director, DJ Lamar Harris. Tanner grabbed the flier and noticed the application deadline was the very next day.

As fortune would have it, Tanner already had a recording ready to submit. He was accepted.

The workshop, called The LAB, is a production of Opera Theatre of St. Louis, where Mia DeJong is Manager of Education and Community Engagement.

"We received many excellent applications for THE LAB and ultimately selected 12 applicants to participate. Applicants come from across the ST. Louis Metro region and represent a number of school districts as well as a wide variety of musical styles," wrote DeJong. "The program kicks-off with an event at the Missouri History Museum on March 17th featuring Terence Blanchard, Lamar Harris, and other musical guests performing live and unpacking their own compositional processes, and will culminate in a professional recording and performance on May 19th."

At The LAB, high school student composers, improvisers, spoken word, and musical artists develop their unique musical voice, exploring new genres, styles, and techniques and collaborating with other aspiring composers and performers.

Tanner's instructors will be some of the most successful musicians to ever emerge from St. Louis.

Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard is one of the most prolific brass players, band leaders, jazz composers, and recording artists of his generation. Since his solo album was released in 1991, Blanchard has composed provocative new jazz material, recorded over 30 albums, and composed more than 50 soundtracks.

A respected artist, educator, arranger, and music director, Lamar Harris has shared the stage with Babyface, Doug E. Fresh, New Edition and Sheila E. In July 2014, St. Louis Magazine named him as the Best Multi-talented DJ in St. Louis. Harris won the Riverfront Times 2013 and 2010 Best Jazz Artist and Best Funk/R&B/Soul awards.
