MRH High School Launches Clothing Drive for Nyumbani Village
Beginning February 1, 2013, the MRH High School Cornerstones Club and Class are collecting clothes for all ages and sizes that are new or gently used for Nyumbani Village in Kenya. Clothing donations may be dropped off at each MRH school building.
The Village was built by Nyumbani, an NGO (non-governmental organization) operating in Kenya to care for 1,000 children orphaned by AIDS and 100 grandparents who lost children to AIDS. Ten children and one grandparent live in each of 80 houses and attend on-site schools. The 20 remaining houses and expanded facilities are being constructed as funding allows.
Almost everything the children and elders need is grown, gathered, raised or made in the village, including vegetables, grains, sunflower oil, bricks, furniture, and water. Some exceptions are shoes and clothing, which are usually donated and in short supply. Nyumbani employs brilliant and creative local environmental engineers who have made this possible and are working toward economic self-sufficiency within the next 5-10 years.
MRH students are currently studying the Village to learn about economic development, social justice, environmental management, as well general life lessons and global awareness.
