Middle School Welcomes Visitor from Local Law Firm
Eighth grade students at Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School are currently studying the Constitution and the Bill of Rights throughout this quarter. In an effort to make sure the curriculum comes to life and the students can put what they are learning to a real world perspective, Social Studies teacher, Julie Meyers, invited a guest speaker, Allison Schrieber Lee, to have a Q & A presentation with her students. Lee is a lawyer at Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal P.C. Attorneys at Law while also being an adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis.
The class was instructed to come up with questions before she arrived. The goal was to think of inquiries that tailored to children their age and how they are protected under the federal law. The following week, the class participated in an active citizen project. They had the opportunity to write a letter to a local elected government official about an issue that pertains to them as minors, make a PSA video about their rights as students, or write a news article/editorial piece about how a specific amendment affects them. This entire unit has allowed them to witness first hand how the law works for them.
