Middle School Sustainability Projects Highlights
Highlighting 7th Grade Communication Arts:
As the end of the school year quickly approaches, seventh grade students are completing their sustainability research projects. Students began this project by choosing a world problem that they wanted to learn more about. A few topics selected by students included animal abuse, recycling, landfills, sweatshops, ocean pollution, and deforestation. As part of the project, students discussed how to conduct research, explored the implications of plagiarism, and learned how to properly cite their sources using MLA format. Each student was required to create an infograph to visually represent important information about their topics, and then they were able to choose two additional activities from a menu of items. Students wrote letters to politicians, created public service announcements, and some even wrote children’s books.
Highlighting Middle School Garden:
Last Wednesday, during P.E. classes, 7th grade students harvested 44.5 pounds of lettuce and 13 pounds of red mustard greens. They started the plants from seeds back in February. MRH-grown lettuce will be served on the salad bar until the end of the school year, and it was even sold at the farmers market at the ECC last Friday, May 15.
