HS Teacher Kathleen Dwyer Named 2015-2016 MRH District Teacher of the Year
The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District recognizes teachers each year who go above and beyond - both in their classroom, and within the community. This year, High School Science Teacher Kathleen Dwyer is the 2015-2016 MRH District Teacher of the Year and High School Teacher of the Year. Dwyer along with her colleagues, who also received recognition at their respective school levels, will be honored at the District’s annual employee appreciation event held in the spring.
The MRH District Teacher of the Year award recognizes a teacher who demonstrates excellence and commitment to teaching. The awardee is honored for his or her passion and commitment to the teaching profession; success of the individual’s classroom teaching approach; professional growth and development; innovation and creativity in the classroom; and knowledge of current teaching techniques and educational issues.
Dwyer has been with MRH High School since 2000 and currently teaches chemistry and AP chemistry. In the summer of 2016 she was awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by President Obama.
In addition to Dwyer, MRH is also honoring a teacher from each of its other three schools:
- Early Childhood Center: Ann McLaughlin, kindergarten/1st grade looping teacher, building-level math coach
- Elementary School: Tim Butz, 4th/5th grade looping teacher
- Middle School: Bill Henske, 7th/8th science teacher
“I’m so happy to honor these four individuals who exemplify the mission of MRH by inspiring and challenging our students with their passion and creativity,” said MRH Superintendent Karen I. Hall. “They, along with every teacher, administrator, and staff member, are dedicated to the success of our students and instilling in them the four cornerstones of our District - leadership, scholarship, stewardship, and citizenship.”
The selection process began at the school level, where building administrators nominate a “School Teacher of the Year.” These four nominations are then reviewed at the district level with one being awarded “District Teacher of the Year.”
