MS Students Explore Newton’s Laws of Motion
Seventh grade scientists in Mrs. Canning’s class have been studying Newton’s laws of motion, and this week they had the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through a hands-on assessment. Each student was given a catapult, a protractor, some cotton balls, and a ruler, and were tasked with planning an investigation that provided evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces that act upon that object. As part of the investigation, students had to form their own testable hypothesis that included a measurable variable, a manipulated variable, and several constants. In addition, students created a table for recording their data, calculated averages, and graphed their findings. Students were then asked to explain the trends that they noticed in their data using Newton’s Second Law.
