MRH Receives 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award
The East-West Gateway Council of Governments has selected the Maplewood Richmond Height School District for the “2010 Outstanding Local Government Achievement Award” for its Healthy Eating with Local Produce program, developed through a partnership with Saint Louis University and Farm to Family Naturally/Sappington Farmers’ Market. The partnership grew from Congressman Russ Carnahan’s healthy foods initiative.
Now in the second year of the Healthy Eating with Local Produce program, MRH is making sure the food is not only healthy, but tastes good. Research has shown that healthy, well-fed children are better learners. A recent Post-Dispatch story noted the changes: “The district of 1,150 students has incrementally, but very deliberately, weaned itself from less-than-healthy offerings, transforming its progressive food program into the envy of school districts around the region.” Read more about the program here.
The East-West Gateway Council of Government honors local jurisdictions, public officials and projects that are making special contributions to their community and to the region. The award was announced earlier this month, and will be presented at their annual meeting on Nov. 12.
