The Evolution of Portrait Work: Portraits in Motion
As part of the Early Childhood Center “School as Studio” program, students in grades pre-K thru first grade draw self-portraits in art class. In first grade the portrait work revolves around bodies in motion. Students are given mirrors and asked to concentrate on the shapes in their bodies while in motion. In Mrs. Veselsky’s first grade class the children extended this project with a special project they were working on in their classroom. The children discovered that everyone has their own strengths and special talents. Through and play and conversation the class decided they wanted to put on a talent show to showcase these talents. The kids worked hard to develop a program to put on for their parents. Mrs. Veselsky took a picture of each child’s talent (body in motion) and the students drew their self-portraits using that picture. The students wrote about their talents and created a program to present to their parents during the talent show. The “Kids Rock Talent Show” was preformed on Thursday, March 7th and was a huge success!
