MRH MS and HS Present Spring Choral Concert on May 1, 2013
Across the Wide Missouri...
The MRH Choral department will be presenting music totally inspired by Missouri on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the MRH Theatre. Admission is free and open to the public.
Many of the selections to be performed were written by native Missourians. The MRHMS Choir will perform two pieces by St. Louis musician’s Jerry Estes (Choir Director, Wydown Middle School, Clayton) and Cornell “Nelly” Haynes (Grammy Winning Hip Hop Artist). The Concert Choir will be performing pieces from Virgil Thomson (Kansas City) and Howard Helvey (Columbia).
Both choirs will perform selections by Sasha Johnson Manning, the English native who served as the St. Louis Chamber Chorus’ (SLCC) Composer-in-Residence. Sasha recently came from her home in Manchester, U.K. to premiere a piece for the SLCC and also worked with the MRH choral students in preparation for their upcoming performance. The students will combine to sing He Never Failed Me Yet, by Robert Ray (St. Louis) and premiere an arrangement of Don’t Get Trouble In Your Mind, by Williams Chiles (Springfield).
In addition to featuring compositions by Missouri composers, the MRH Choral Department will perform music inspired by the words and works of Walt Disney and Tennessee Williams. Walt Disney was not born in Missouri, but lived in Marceline and Kansas City for many years. Tennessee Williams also moved to Missouri during his childhood. He and his family relocated to St. Louis from Columbus, Mississippi and Williams briefly studied Journalism at the University of Missouri. After a considerable amount of time, Tennessee Williams returned to his studies completed his college education at Washington University.
