New Teacher Orientation at Maplewood Richmond Heights
It is that time of the year again, school supply renewal, classroom preparation, back-to-school shopping, and of course new teacher orientation. An entire day dedicated to new teacher and staff orientation took place on August 5, 2013, in the High School’s Research and Design Center.
MRH’s new teachers were greeted at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast as they mingled with their new colleagues. Introductions of the new teachers took place before business started.
The daylong orientation, led by Karen I. Hall, superintendent and Roxanna Mechem, assistant superintendent was designed to familiarize new teachers with goals, expectations, and the mission of Maplewood Richmond Heights School District. Specifically, how they can carry out the District’s mission within their classrooms as well as their everyday encounters with students.
The first half of the day was focused on curriculum and theories. The emphasis was placed on how teachers can assist students. The second half of the day was a crash course on “everything MRH,” including a tour of all of the campuses.
Kaelin O’Connor, second grade teacher/MU fellow, shared her sentiments about the day. “I think it was really neat, I enjoyed learning more about MRH. My favorite part was touring the District and getting to see firsthand how the mission is being physically executed in the classroom,” said O’Connor.
Roxanna Mechem, also shared her thoughts on the orientation. “I think teacher orientation went really well. We have a fabulous group of new teachers who are very excited. They really embraced and understood the mission of the District and are going to be great members of the MRH family.”
