Annual Hoops for Hunger Food Drive Supports Weekend on Wheels
Two weeks have been dedicated to Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School’s annual Hoops for Hunger food drive. All canned goods from this collection will benefit Weekend on Wheels, a food pantry that supports 15 families within the community.
Hoops for Hunger is a student versus staff basketball game started about ten years ago. Each Middle School homeroom class brings in canned goods which they receive points for. Whoever collects the most canned goods and receives the most points, form a team to play a friendly game of basketball against select staff members and teachers.
This district-wide food drive typically brings in about 1,600-2,000 food items. This year the District is providing Thanksgiving meals for all of the Weekend on Wheels families so the students get extra points for bringing in Thanksgiving food items.
Weekend on Wheels provides weekly deliveries of non-perishable food items to district families who need a little extra help during difficult times. MRH has set a goal for 2,000 cans compared to the 1,600 they brought in last year. Thanks to all those for supporting this district initiative.
