MRH to Install Modular Classroom Building at Elementary School for 2014-2015

Dear MRH Parent/Guardian(s) and Community Members:

Over the course of this past year, the MRH administration and Board of Education have been closely monitoring and studying our growing student enrollment throughout the District.  We have hosted town hall meetings at each campus with parents to discuss the enrollment increases and facilities and space issues.  While growth does pose problems, it does show that our District is attracting more families in the community and that more students are staying at MRH as they transition from campus to campus.

While the student population is increasing at every campus, the most notable growth is occurring at the Elementary School where our enrollment is projected to increase to 510-520 students for the 2014-2015 school year; an increase from our current level of 479 students this year.  Just five years ago in 2008-2009, the enrollment was only 365 students in the Elementary building.  This represents a 42% increase in just a few short years.

Our District has always strived to maintain small class sizes and provide our students the personalized service we so highly value.  For the 2014-2015 school year we will be hiring an additional 2nd grade teacher, 3rd grade teacher, 4th grade teacher, and an extra math and reading interventionist to meet the increased enrollment at the Elementary while maintaining our small class sizes.

Given that our Elementary building is already at full capacity and we do not have extra classroom space available, we will also be placing a modular building on the campus this summer. This two-room classroom structure will be erected on the north side of the existing building, adjacent to the gymnasium and cafeteria door, on the paved lot.  This temporary building will provide us much-needed space until we are able to devise and implement a permanent, long-term solution on the campus.

All grade level classes (general education classes) will remain in the current building.  Special programs, such as (E4) gifted education and Seed to Table will take place in the modular unit.  We made this decision so that minimal student transitions are required to go to and from the main building to the modular unit.  The modular classroom building will have all the same resources as our other classrooms and will include year-round climate control, bathrooms, and technology equipment.

The Board of Education has reconvened its Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee to meet later this month to begin looking at possible scenarios to meet our long-term space needs.  Looking at the overall enrollment trends and future projections, we anticipate needing additional space at all of our campuses in the coming years.

Working together, we will maintain high standards and quality educational instruction for our children in the years to come.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Central Office or the Elementary School.
