Student Group on Race Relations: A New Group at MRH HS
A new group, Student Group on Race Relations (SGORR), has been founded at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School. The group focuses on different racial topics that the students, along with the faculty advisors, see happening throughout their everyday lives and their communities.
The group meets at 7:00 a.m. every Thursday morning before school where they discuss a different topic every week. During a session they may have a guest speaker, watch a video that relates to their discussion for the week, openly read various articles, or engage in passionate discussions about race and each student’s experience. SGORR is a very diverse group at MRH and is open to all students interested in joining the weekly forum.
The students talk about different topics and can even branch out to other fields as long as it relates in someway back to race. Recently, their agendas have included how employment can be affected or the treatment of somebody can be contingent on one’s race or social class.
They talk about sensitive and heavy topics that require a respectful platform and an open-minded audience such as racism, oppression, institutionalized systems and many more complex, mature theories and topics.
The goal of this group is to ensure that the students have a safe space to voice critical issues that pertain to them or the people around them and to ultimately in some way have input on the change that they want to see happen within their worlds.
