Dr. Joseph Johnson (NCUST) Presents MRH HS with Gold Award
On Monday, August 24, 2015, Maplewood Richmond Heights High School held a special assembly to welcome Dr. Joseph Johnson, Executive Director of the National Center for Urban Education to MRH while also honoring Kathleen Dwyer, chemistry teacher, for a recent award that she received. Dwyer won the 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science earlier in the year, as a result of that, she was able to travel to Washington D.C. to receive her award from President Obama.
In 2014, it was announced that MRH High School had been honored with the 2015 National Excellence in Urban Education Award from the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST). MRH is the only high school in the United States to be honored as a “gold” winner for 2015.
While Kevin Grawer, High School Principal and John Capuano, Coordinator of Educational Exploration traveled to Dallas, Texas to receive this award, Dr. Johnson wanted to travel to MRH to formally present the award to the students, staff and community.
“During my conversations with Dr. Johnson he frequently discussed the uniqueness of our school. He continuously mentioned our high achievement rates across all areas and our continued improvement, not just regarding academic areas such as ACT, EOC, and graduation rates, but the huge drop in discipline referrals, the improvement in hourly timeliness to class and the common sense approach to educating kids from challenging backgrounds,” says Grawer.
