Middle School Students Explore Author Langston Hughes
In order to explore extended metaphors, scholars in Mrs. Strubhar’s class read and analyzed Langston Hughes’ poem Mother to Son. In this poem, a mother uses the metaphor of life being a staircase in order to give advice to her son about difficult times. Using Hughes’ extended metaphor as an exemplary model, students created their own metaphor poems, comparing concepts such as family, life, love, and happiness to a seemingly unrelated item. After crafting their poems, students considered the mood of their work, and how that mood could best be illustrated through artwork. Once they decided how they wanted to depict their mood, they located photos that represented their metaphor, and used online software to edit the pictures’ color and sharpness in a way that best reflected their poem’s mood. Finally, using the tenets of collage art, students arranged their poems, and pieces of their photos, into the shape of their metaphor.
