Weekly Learning: Highlighting 7th Grade Civic Action
Students in Mr. Mattia’s class have been busy planning and implementing civic action projects designed to address social and power relation issues that they see in their own region.
Students began by defining the problem, as well as possible solutions, and then completing a cost benefit analysis to determine the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches. Individual classes voted on the civic action that they wanted to move forward with, and winning groups presented their projects to the entire school during this week’s Town Hall meeting. Students were allowed to investigate their own issue as well, if they were not passionate about the class selection. Issues addressed included the Black Lives Matter movement, where students presented information on its importance; a proposal for the creation of a MS Gay-Straight Alliance and its benefits to the school community and students’ overall health and well-being; and the support of a local animal shelter, Open Door Animal Sanctuary, through a school-wide bake sale.
