An Upside of Road Construction: History Revealed
Perhaps no one's been busier during the summer of 2017 than the public works and streets crews for the city of Maplewood, and their contractor partners. Massive repaving projects are ongoing along such major thoroughfares as Big Bend Boulevard.
On a recent jaunt along Big Bend near Flora, Maplewood Richmond Heights high-schooler Matthew Langston spotted a bit of local history beneath the peeled-away layers of asphalt: cobblestones and rails used by streetcars throughout the first half of the 1900's.
The Maplewood city manager's office says no one ever gets to see the original cobblestones anymore, until a construction project unveils them. All of the tracks and cobblestones, they say, were paved over decades ago along such streets as Manchester, Sutton, Flora and the Yale median.
City Manager Marty Corcoran says the last streetcar quitting running in Maplewood in 1954.
