2020-2021 MRH Academic Calendar Approved by Board of Education

MRH School Board approves revised calendar for 2020-2021.The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District Board of Education on Thursday night gave final approval to a revised calendar for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Key points include:

  • The 2020 school year will begin on August 25. Parents and teachers agreed upon a Tuesday starting day because of the rigors of the first week back following summer break.

  • Election day, Nov. 3, 2020, will be a professional development day for teachers, meaning no school for students. This action was designed to minimize the potential for overcrowding among voters and students at MRH Elementary, a polling place. ALL MRH schools will be closed to students on Nov. 3.

  • Parent/teacher conferences will take place in the 2nd week of November for all grade levels.

  • During winter break, the Monday and Tuesday prior to Christmas Friday will be regular attendance days. The MRH calendar committee took this action in order to prevent students and staff from being in school past the first week of June.

  • The 2nd quarter/1st semester will end AFTER winter break, on January 15.

  • Spring parent/teacher conferences will be split between the 2nd week of February (ECC, HS, MS) and the final week of March (ELE).

  • The academic year will end on Thursday, June 3.

The calendar overhaul was made necessary by passage of Missouri House Bill 161, which  prohibits local school districts from setting an opening date for the school term that is more than 14 calendar days prior to the first Monday in September. The bill was signed into law by Governor Parson this summer.

The MRH calendar is developed by the district’s calendar committee, which comprises parents, staff, and administrators. They are charged with creating a calendar that is two years ahead of the current school year to ensure families have planning time for special events and summer vacations. During this extensive process, the committee ensures the school community has the opportunity to provide input. This feedback is reflected in the final proposal sent to the School Board for review.
