Walking the Walk on Emergency Preparedness
Members of the Maplewood Fire Department today conducted the latest in a series of walkthroughs to familiarize themselves with the upgraded High School/Middle School safety and security features. MRH Operations Director Dr. Michael Dittrich led the tour, pointing out the new room number signs, electrical panels and fire suppression hookups. Several of the firefighters were familiar with the layout of the building from prior experience, but were grateful for the opportunity to walk the newly renovated spaces.
Knowing the building’s layout helps them:
- Quickly Navigate: They can locate key areas like classrooms, hallways, gyms, and stairwells without wasting time, which is critical in emergencies.
- Access Vital Resources: Familiarity ensures they know the locations of fire alarms, extinguishers, hydrants, and electrical panels.
- Ensure Evacuations: They can better assist staff and students with safe evacuation routes or locate those who might be trapped or unable to evacuate on their own.
- Plan Strategically: Understanding the building’s structure helps them anticipate challenges, such as areas with limited access, roof vulnerabilities, or ventilation hazards.
- Coordinate with School Staff: Familiarity improves communication and collaboration with school administrators and safety teams during drills or real emergencies.
Regular walkthroughs and updates to their knowledge of any structural changes in the buildings enhance overall preparedness and safety for everyone involved.
