Teacher, Support Staff of the Year Announced

An early childhood teacher who serves as a leading advocate for MRH teachers and a top administrative assistant who graduated from the District in 1999 have been named the Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year for 2025.

Annie Rothenberg, a seven-year veteran of MRH, was nominated by multiple peers to be named Teacher of the Year. Ms. Rothenberg teaches 1st and 2nd grade students and is the president of the MRH chapter of the National Education Association.

One nominating letter stated: “Annie demonstrates a strong commitment to enhancing her craft by actively seeking opportunities to learn and grow. She has been a member of the new math curriculum team, is nearing completion of her LETRS training, and is part of the new competency-based teacher group. Recently, she achieved National Board Teacher certification. In addition to these accomplishments, she continues to serve as the president of our MRH NEA, representing our staff with dedication and professionalism.”

Another letter stated: “Annie has a way of creating lessons and plans to support teachers and students. She can understand the content deeply and is then able to create lessons that can be shared with others. Her students reach their goals and she has a solid understanding of what their academic needs are.”

Kat Norton wears the Support Staff of the Year crown for 2025. She serves as the administrative assistant to the Superintendent of Schools. Ms. Norton attended MRH schools from her 6th grade year through graduation. In 2004, she returned to MRH as a substitute office employee before being elevated to a top administrative aide position. She has served under three superintendents.

Her nominating letter contained high praise, saying “Kat Norton exemplifies what it means to be an exceptional team player, consistently serving as a thoughtful listener and a trusted thought partner to her colleagues. She is a natural problem-solver who asks insightful questions that spark innovative solutions, often uncovering possibilities that others may not have initially considered. Her deep understanding of district policy ensures that board members and staff are always informed and prepared for any changes and she approaches her work with diligence and precision.”

The letter continued with “Her support also extends far beyond her immediate role, as she dedicates time and effort to assist staff with tasks such as navigating [our board document system], ensuring their success and alleviating stress. Kat’s commitment to students is equally remarkable. She actively supports students who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as those connected to Joe’s Place by creating opportunities for inclusion and belonging. Whether it’s offering her time, resources, or simply a listening ear, Kat ensures that every individual feels valued and supported.”

Ms. Rothenberg and Ms. Norton each received cash prizes and premium tickets to a Cardinals baseball game courtesy of CommunityAmerica Credit Union. By virtue of earning the MRH Teacher of the Year title, Ms. Rothenberg also becomes the Mid-County Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year and will be honored at a separate ceremony later this year.
