Parents as Teachers
Welcome to Parents as Teachers
Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a national program that stands on the belief that parents are their children’s first and most influential teachers. Stressing the importance of three main ideals --Parent/Child Interaction, Developmental Centered Parenting, and Family Well-Being -- this program has flourished since its beginning, here in Missouri, in 1985.
Maplewood Richmond Heights is committed to the community by connecting and engaging families. Services are provided prenatally through kindergarten entry, free of charge, and include:
- Home visits
- Access to monthly PAT newsletters and activiites
- Parent workshops and peer support opportunities
- Monthly group connections where kids play with peers
- Vision, hearing and development screenings
- Links to informal resources and community services
Enrollment in the PAT program is ongoing. Information for the preferred method of enrollment. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 314-256-4562 if you have questions about the process.

Register for Screenings, January 8, 2022
Your child's first five years of life are crucial for development and we want to help provide the best start possible! A central component of the Parents as Teachers model is administering screenings for children ages three months through kindergarten entry. The screening we use at Maplewood Richmond Heights Early Childhood Center is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-2) for children three months to six years old. This screening looks at a child's development in the areas of communication, fine and gross motor, personal-social skills, problem solving and social-emotional.
The ASQ is completed by the parent, the parent educator and the child. During the screening, you will be asked questions about your child and your child will also perform several tasks to demonstrate development. After the screening, you will receive an information summary that provides a score in each area. If there are areas of concern, your parent educator will discuss options for next steps and help connect you with the appropriate resources, if necessary. Additionally, you will be provided with information about your child's progress and given resources for ways to support their development across these domains as they grow.
We are offering developmental screenings at the Maplewood Richmond Heights Early Childhood Center (2810 Burgess Ave, Maplewood, MO 63143) on Saturday, January 8 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Please sign up for a screening time at this link.
If you're unable to make this screening date, we're happy to schedule a screening at another time and we will also be offering additional screening dates this spring. Please email us or call 314-256-4562 to schedule a screening on a different date.
