MRH ECC Parent Update, January 27, 2020

Maplewood Richmond Heights Early Childhood Center

ECC artists are inspired by artist Deborah Roberts

DEBORAH ROBERTS

As a part of Black History Month, we will be celebrating the art work of Deborah Roberts. (American, b. 1962) Deborah is a mixed media artist whose work challenges the notion of ideal beauty. Her work has been exhibited internationally across the USA and Europe. She is the recipient of the Anonymous Was a Woman Grant (2018), the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant (2016) and a Ginsberg-Klaus Award Fellowship (2014). She received her MFA from Syracuse University, New York. She lives and works in Austin, Texas.

"My early ideals of race and beauty were shaped by and linked through paintings of renaissance artists and photographs in fashion magazines. Those images were mythical, heroic, beautiful, and powerful and embodied a particular status that was not afforded equally to anyone I knew. Those images influenced the way I viewed myself and other African Americans, which led me to investigate the way our identities have been imagined and shaped by societal interpretations of beauty."

ECC School Wide Title Survey:

Dear Parents,

MRH ECC & the Elementary School are Schoolwide Title Schools. This means that we receive federal monies under the Schoolwide Title Grant programming. This federally funded program is designed to address the educational needs of children living in impoverished communities with comprehensive strategies for improving the whole school so every student achieves high levels of academic proficiency. The monies can be used to support:

  • high quality professional development,
  • literacy coaching by content experts,
  • academic intervention, and
  • purchase of supplemental instructional materials

As a part of the Title One guidelines, we are required to survey parents about their experiences, and analyze the results to improve our services. To that that end, I have included the link to our on-line Parent Survey and ask that you take a moment to respond. This is for all of our kindergarten, first grade, and second grade parents, not just those that may have a child receiving a specific service, as SchoolwideTitle funds are designed to improve the education of all children! Paper copies will also be available during our upcoming ECC Parent /Teacher conferences .

Cyndi Hebenstreit
