MRH Speech and Debate Qualifies for National Tournament

Four MRH students qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association Championship Tournament at the Eastern Missouri District Tournament.

Debaters Sam Siemer and Jack Funke won the EastMO District championship in Policy Debate, finishing ahead of Clayton and Jefferson City High School. Team Captain, Katy Corcoran, placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking. Odessa Javier placed third in Original Oration. The district tournament is an all-class competition featuring the top students from Columbia, Jefferson City, and the St. Louis metro area.

Assistant Coach Sam Smith was honored as District Volunteer of the Year at the season-ending tournament.

MRH finished fourth in the team competition behind its much larger competitors Jefferson City, Rock Bridge, and Clayton. Several students reached elimination rounds, but finished short of Nationals qualification. Those were: Leia Skolnick, Maia Truemper, Vera Pantazis, Nate Boyle, Enzo Gilbonio, Graham Colvin, Nathan Crader, and Claire Moylan.

The students will compete at the National Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa on June 16-22. This is the second consecutive year the Blue Devils have qualified for Nationals.
