Native American Heritage Month, 2021

  • The MRH Board of Education opened its November 8, 2021, monthly meeting with a recognition of Native American Heritage Month. Board vice president Katie Kaufmann read the following statement:

"The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District would like to acknowledge that we are living and learning on the traditional land of several indigenous peoples both past and present. We honor with gratitude the land itself, the people of these indigenous communities, and the relationship that exists between the people and the land. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced occupation of their territory. We respect the many diverse indigenous people connected to this land on which we gather."

Tribes within the Maplewood and Richmond Heights footprint: Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Kaskaskia, Osage, Myaamia, O-ga-xpa Ma-Zho (O-ga-xpa), Ochethi Sakowin according to the Native Land Digital resource www.native-land.ca
